De lotus heeft in het hindoe\u00efsme<\/a> en het boeddhisme<\/a> grote betekenis. De bloem symboliseert goddelijke geboorte en zuiverheid. De lotus is het attribuut van de bodhisattva Samantabhadra<\/a>. Ook de hindoe-god Vishnoe<\/a> wordt meestal afgebeeld met een lotusbloem. Godinnen voorgesteld als goedgunstige partner van een god houden vaak een lotus vast. Godheden, boeddha’s en bodhisattva’s staan of zitten meestal op een lotustroon: een voetstuk in de vorm van een open lotusbloem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De lotusbloem werd ook in de\u00a0Perzische<\/a>\u00a0oudheid<\/a>\u00a0gebruikt. Er zijn verschillende afbeeldingen van\u00a0Darius I<\/a>\u00a0en\u00a0Xerxes I<\/a>\u00a0waarop zij afgebeeld staan met een lotusbloem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
